Maternity care

In the Netherlands, you are entitled to maternity care after giving birth. The maternity carer will help you settle in your baby at home. The maternity carer will monitor the health of mother and child, will teach you and your partner how to care for the baby and will also help with breastfeeding. Maternity care can be given until 6 weeks after the birth.

Reimbursement of maternity care

The care provider and midwife will establish the number of hours of maternity care to be received in consultation with us. When establishing the number of hours maternity care to be provided, we observe the national indication protocol on maternity care ('landelijk indicatieprotocol kraamzorg'). You'll find an explanation in English in this document on maternity assistance. The number of hours and days will depend in part on the family composition and on the presence of help from family or friends (homecare).

Statutory personal contribution

A statutory personal contribution of € 5,40 per hour applies to maternity care in your home. Do you have a medical indication for childbirth in a hospital or institution? Then you will not have to pay any personal contribution for maternity care for the duration of your inpatient stay.

If you have no medical indication, but have chosen to give birth in a hospital, a maternity hotel or a birth centre? Then you will pay a statutory personal contribution of € 21,50 per day for you and € 21,50 per day for your child. Is your inpatient stay costing more than € 152,- per day? If so, you will have pay the excess yourself.

Excess

The costs of maternity will not count towards your excess.

How to receive maternity care

To receive maternity care, you must register with a maternity care provider. Do your utmost to register before the 16th week of your pregnancy. This will give your care provider sufficient time to organise things before the baby is born. Your midwife will be able to advise you on maternity care providers in your area, or use our Care finder tool.

Who can provide this type of care?

Maternity care can be given by contracted birth centres, maternity carers or hospitals. Use our Care finder to find a care provider near you.

Coverage of an interpreter

Pregnant women who do not speak sufficient Dutch are eligible for coverage of the costs of an interpreter. It's important for the mother-to-be to fully understand the information given by the obstetrician and the maternity care provider, and that she has the opportunity to ask questions. An interpreter can help out. The obstetrician or maternity care provider will determine whether there is a need for an interpreter. If so, they will organise a professional interpreter. For this, they will be reimbursed.
