Urgent foreign care

Urgent care is medical care that you had not planned and that cannot wait. You may also need urgent care if you are abroad temporarily. For example when you are on holiday or on a bussiness trip. If you need urgent care abroad, the medical care required cannot wait until you return to the Netherlands.

Reimbursements

When will you qualify for reimbursement?

Under the public health insurance, you will qualify for the reimbursement of the cost of care abroad, provided the care in question falls under the cover provided by the public healthcare insurance in the Netherlands too. In EU and EEA countries and Switzerland, you will also qualify for the reimbursement of care that is medically necessary according to the social health system in the country in which you are present at the time. For the reimbursement of urgent care abroad, the same conditions apply as for the right of that care in the Netherlands. For example, the need for a referral.

For reimbursement under our supplementary insurance, the care in question must be urgent care that cannot be postponed until you return to the Netherlands.

Read the HollandZorg conditions of insurance for the cover and reimbursement applicable to care abroad.

Reimbursement for urgent care abroad

Under the HollandZorg basic health insurance, you qualify for urgent care abroad up to a maximum of the rate most competitive in the Netherlands.
Basic Health Insurance Supplementary Insurance
HollandZorg public healthcare insurance The care provider that provides you with care will not usually have been contracted by us. In this situation, the reimbursement will be equal to the reimbursement that you would receive from us if this care were provided by a non-contracted care provider in the Netherlands.

If a maximum rate applies to the same care in the Netherlands, we will reimburse you up to a maximum of this rate. If no maximum rate applies, we will reimburse you up to the most competitive rate in the Netherlands*.

Alternatively, if you are staying temporarily in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you could receive a reimbursement in line with the social health system in that country (if this is more favourable for you). However, the care in question must be medically necessary in this situation.

* Explanation of most competitive rate in the Netherlands
The most competitive rate in the Netherlands is the rate that applies in the Netherlands to the care that you are receiving. The cost of care abroad may be higher or lower than in the Netherlands.

** Explanation of reimbursement under the supplementary insurance
Under the supplementary insurance, you will qualify for:

  • urgent care that falls under the cover provided by the basic health insurance, but that is not reimbursed in full under the basic health insurance.
  • medically necessary transport to the Netherlands or your country of residence. For example, if we feel that the care is not really feasible, medically ill-advised or far more expensive in the country in question than in the Netherlands.

The maximum reimbursement applies to the various components taken together. Read the HollandZorg conditions of insurance for more information.

Will you receive the reimbursement under the social health system in the country in which you are residing temporarily? The Dutch scheme referred to above will not apply in this situation.

Who may provide this type of care?

On January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom (UK) left the European Union (EU). New arrangements are being negotiated by the UK and the EU around the reimbursement of medically necessary care for EU citizens in the UK. Depending on the agreements that are made, this may have implications for your health insurance.

Depending on the care that you need, you will be able to approach a general practitioner or the accident and emergency department in a hospital abroad. In all EU-countries you can call the alarm number 112 in case of emergency.

HollandZorg Emergency centre
You are only entitled to reimbursement if the Emergency centre coordinates the care or transport. Our staff will arrange for you to receive the care you need and help you to find a care provider. You can contact us 24 hours a day, seven days a week on +31 (0)570 687 112. Send your e-mail message to: alarmcentrale@hollandzorg.nl.

International invoices must be drawn up in Dutch, German, English, French, Polish, Spanish or Turkish.
