First-line inpatient stay

A first-line ('eerstelijns') inpatient stay is a short-term stay in a care facility when you are temporarily not able to take care of yourself in your own home.

Reimbursement of a first-line inpatient stay

First-line inpatient stays are aimed at recovery and return to the home situation in the short term or relate to palliative terminal care.

The care does not include:

Referral needed?

You will need a referral from a General Practitioner or a medical specialist for a first-line inpatient stay.

When are you entitled to an inpatient stay?

You are entitled to reimbursement of first-line inpatient stay when a short-term stay is required on medical grounds. This is to include round-the-clock availability and provision of nursing and/or care, whether or not in conjunction with paramedical care connected to the grounds for the stay.

Reimbursements of first-line inpatient stays

By virtue of the public health insurance, you are entitled to reimbursement of a inpatient stay.

Statutory personal contribution

There is no personal contribution for a first-line inpatient stay.

Compulsory excess

If you are aged 18 or older, the costs count towards your compulsory excess.

You can contact an institution for first-line inpatient stays.

Apply for consent

If the institution you have been referred to has no care contract with us, you will need our prior written consent.

Maximum rates for a non-contracted care provider

Have you chosen a healthcare provider with whom we have no contract? Then, we will reimburse according to our maximum rates for 2024. If the rate invoiced by the non-contracted care provider is higher than our maximum rates, you will have to pay the difference yourself. You will be able to find contracted care providers with our Care finder.
