Personal alarm

Personal alarm equipment is a portable, wireless emergency switch that you can use to activate a telephone dialler.

Reimbursements

This dialler contacts a control room that is manned 24/7. A relief worker will come to your assistance if necessary. You can also appoint someone close to as contact person.

Personal alarm equipment is considered a medical aid.

Reimbursement under the basic health insurance

When you meet the conditions and you have a prescription from a physician, you will be fully reimbursed for the hire and connection costs for personal alarm equipment. The equipment must be provided by a contracted provider. The personal alarm equipment is given on loan. The guideline is a minimum useful life of 120 months (10 years).
You will not be reimbursed for service and/or subscription costs for being connected to a 24-hour control room. More information is given in our Medical aids regulations (in Dutch).

Maximum rates non-contracted provider

If the medical aids are available from a contracted care provider when you need them, but you prefer to go to a non-contracted care provider instead, we will apply a maximum reimbursement. The non-contracted provider has to comply with the conditions set out in the Medical aids regulations (in Dutch). The costs of a medical aid that we would normally give on loan are reimbursed per calendar year. We will reimburse a maximum of 75% of the costs we would incur for providing that care on loan in that calendar year. We set off the number of days you are entitled to those medical aids against the number of days you actually have the medical aid at your disposal in that calendar year.

Reimbursement under the supplementary insurance packages

By virtue of various supplementary insurances, you are entitled to reimbursement for an alarm system for a central alarm service and the corresponding connection costs. This type of care may be provided by a supplier of medical aids. The reimbursement does not include subscription costs or any costs of follow-up after a call.

When do you qualify for personal alarm equipment?

You are entitled to personal alarm equipment by virtue of the public health insurance (medical aids) if you have a physical impairment and there is an increased risk situation. This means that due to your impairment, you are at a bigger risk of falling and being unable to get up independently after a fall.

In addition, you have to meet the following conditions:

  • in the case of an emergency, you need immediate medical or technical assistance from someone else
  • you have to depend on yourself for prolonged periods of time
  • you are unable to independently operate the telephone in emergency situations

If you fail to meet the aforementioned conditions, you may qualify for an allowance for personal alarm equipment via supplementary insurance. Monitoring equipment to prevent cot death does not fall under personal alarm equipment.

Statutory personal contribution

There is no statutory personal contribution for hire and connection costs for personal alarm equipment if there is a medical indication. You will pay service and/or subscription costs for being connected to a 24-hour control room.

Do you qualify for reimbursement under the supplementary insurance? We reimburse the costs of a central alarm service, subject to a maximum amount per year. In the event that the costs exceed the maximum amount reimbursed by us for the various elements, you must pay the difference.

Excess

There is no excess for personal alarm equipment.

Who can provide this type of care?

If you require personal alarm equipment, you can approach one of the providers contracted by us. This provider will establish whether you require personal alarm equipment on medical grounds and - if so - will contact you about delivering and installing it. If you require the central alarm service, you can approach a provider of medical aids.
